Life-sized Tarantula Beaded Keychain

Just the thing to guard your keys!

Our Tarantula Beaded Keychain

You will be the topic of conversation when your friends see you carrying your keys attached to THIS beautiful spider! It is life-sized and oh, so impressive. It stands up on its own legs like a real tarantula, and it sparkles in the sun. What more could a spider-lover or Halloween afficianado ask for?

We have a number of spider products in our store, so why does this tarantula keychain scream "tarantella" to me? Maybe because it's almost the size of my hand and is so animated-looking that I half expect it to either skittle away or come after me on dancing legs.

This spider keychain would be the perfect scary accessory to carry with you on Halloween night. Or you might love it so much you'd want "Spidee" with you all year 'round. This is actually a beautiful beaded animal with its purple, shiny beads and sturdily-woven construction.

The beading on these tarantula keychains is securely stitched into a woven fabric of beads and is very sturdy. Unlike some beaded animals I've seen that are beautiful and engaging but very delicate, these tarantulas are durable and with normal handling will hold up extremely well. Check out our other tarantula items as well as our page of beaded keychains from Guatemala. When you purchase one of these unique animals from our collection, you help in a number of ways. You help save tapirs, because that's what we do. You help the local artisans in Guatemala who need an outlet for their work (yes, jobs!), and you help my friend Catherine with her sustainable business of working with the artisans of Guatemala to maintain jobs for themselves and make beautiful art for many people around the world to enjoy.

About Tarantulas

The true tarantula (Lycosa tarantula) is an Italian wolf spider whose habitat is centered around the city of Taranto. While this was the first species of spider to be named "tarantula", it is not to be confused with the tarantulas of the western hemisphere. A true tarantula is neither large nor hairy, and while its venom has never been proven to be threatening to humans, local superstition says the bite of a tarantula produses a disease called "tarantism", which can only be cured through the performance of a frenzied dance called the tarantella.

Particularly in North America, the term "tarantula" commonly refers to any large-bodied, hairy spider. Currently, over 900 species of spider have been associated with the name tarantula. Some hunt primarily in trees, some on the ground. All tarantulas are venomous, but most are harmless to humans, with very few having extremely unpleasant side effects. The largest species of tarantula, the Goliath Birdeater (Theraphosa blondi) has a leg-span of up to 12 inches and can weigh almost half a pound.

Plastic Trapdoor Spider

Parlor? This dude has a CELLAR!

Our Plastic Trap-Door Spider

This engaging, idealized plastic spider is made of hard durable plastic. It is 2 inches long and 1 3/8 inches wide. Our spider resembles the trapdoor spider, due to its shape, hard shelled thorax, and distinct boxing glove-shaped palps, that is, the two "sensory feelers" at front of its head. I found an Asian variety which has yellow, green and dark purple coloration, like our example. Our trapdoor spider makes a good replica in a shoe box diorama or for any school project. It is also an excellent party favor. Check out our other spider toys and gifts.

About Trap-Door Spiders

The trapdoor spider belongs to the family Ctenizidae. These are spiders that burrow and construct a trapdoor of silk, vegetable matter and soil. These relatively harmless spiders are found in numerous places in the world, especially in rainforests and warmer climates. The trapdoor is difficult to see. The spider holds it partially open, especially at night, and waits for unsuspecting prey to pass near its burrow. The trapdoor spider has an uncanny sense of movement. When movement is sensed, the spider then captures the prey in its tarsi or claws, which are at the ends of its fangs.
