Large Plastic Brown Beetle

Believe me when I say beetles are EVERYWHERE!

Our Plastic Brown Beetle

This large and detailed plastic brown beetle is made of somewhat flexible plastic with good quality. This replica is robust and durable, ready for hours of play! While it does not float, this beetle replica makes for a great toy, gift, or centerpiece for a school project. It is 5 1/4 inches long with a realistic textured surface. An impressive figurine in size and detail! Check out our other beetle and insect toys and gifts.

About Beetles

The name Beetle refers to any of the 400,000 known species of insect belonging to the order Coleoptera (taken from the Greek words for "sheathed wing"). Virtually all beetles have two sets of wings, front and back. The rear set of wings are commonly used to fly, while the forward set is thick and hard, forming a protective shell or "sheath" over the flying wings and the rear of the beetle's body. Beetles represent nearly 40% of all insect species in the world, and new species are being discovered all the time. In fact, the order Coleoptera includes more species than any other order, and represents nearly a quarter of all life-forms on the planet. Scientists believe the total number of beetle species, discovered and undiscovered, to be between 1 and 100 million species. Beetles are widely diverse in size, weight, and coloration, and exist in every habitat on Earth except marine and polar.

About Japanese Rhinoceros Beetles

The Japanese rhinoceros beetle (Allomyrina dichotoma) is a common insect, and integral part of popular culture, in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Korea. The Japanese name for the species is kabutomushi, which means literally "helmet-bug".

This beetle appears as the center of many television, cinematic, anime, and advertising works in Japan, in much the same way that tigers and geckos do in the United States. Rhino beetles are also popular in games of chance, which usually pit two male beetles in a contest of strength. They are also popular pets, and are even sold from vending machines. Japanese rhino beetles live only four months as a beetle.

Plastic Digger Bee Replica

Your project will be the "buzz" of the school with this as its centerpiece!

Our Plastic Digger Bee

This engaging, realistic-looking plastic digger bee is flexible. The wings are securely glued onto the back and are made of a semi-transparent floppy plastic. The bee comes with a thin elastic loop firmly attached to the top between the thorax and abdomen. The loop is 4 inches long when relaxed, and if attached or held, the bee will bounce and swing according to your movements or when touched by the breeze if hung outdoors. The wings are 6 1/2 inches from tip to tip, and the body, from the front of the feelers to the end of the tail, is 4 1/4 inches long. Splotches of yellow paint on the legs indicate that this bee has been collecting pollen. The plastic digger bee comes with an informational tag. Check out our other bee toys and gifts.

About Bees

Bees are insects, having six legs, a head, thorax and abdomen. There are about 20,000 species of bee. The digger bee (Ptilothrix bombi formis) can be found in most of North America. They fly to such a wide variety of flowers that they are at times called flower-loving bees. They tend to frequent hibiscus flowers. Adult bees burrow nests into clay or sand banks where they store honey and pollen for food. The entrance to the nest is then hidden by a chimney constructed of mud. The digger bee collects pollen on its hind legs and carries it back to the nest.

Plastic Ladybug

Yet another fine replica for your biology project!

Our Plastic Ladybug

This engaging, realistic, plastic ladybug is made of hard durable plastic. It is 1 3/4 inches long. It makes a good replica in a shoe box diorama or for any school project. It is also an excellent party favor. Check out our other ladybug toys and gifts.

About Ladybugs

The ladybug is general term of a family of beetles, Coccinellidae, with over 5000 species. In some parts of the world they are called ladybirds or lady beetles. They are small, about 3/8 inch and are generally orange, scarlet or yellow with black spots on their wing covers. This bright coloration acts as a defense mechanism against predators, who associate it with toxicity or acrid odor. In fact, the ladybug secretes an oily yellowish substance from its leg joints when roughly handled. The ladybug is a useful insect since it eats garden pests such as aphids, mites, and mealybugs. It is fun to find them and watch them crawl about, but sometimes they can be a household pest as well. I have seen them hatch by the hundreds.

It works well for a shoe box diorama or other school projects. It also makes for an interesting party favor or for a gag. Check out our other dragonfly toys and gifts.

About Dragonflies

A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata. It is has large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies eat mosquitoes, midges, and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are valuable predators, since they help control populations of harmful insects. Dragonflies are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Dragonflies do not normally bite or sting humans, though they will bite in order to escape, if grasped by the abdomen. Dragonflies hover above the water, but then can rapidly accelerate. They capture their prey by clasping them in legs studded by spikes. We are most familiar with the adult stage of the dragonfly, but most of their life is spent as a nymph below the water.
