About Daschunds

A member of the hound group, the daschund is a small-sized breed of domestic dog originally bred to scent-track and root out badgers and other burrow-dwelling game. Daschunds range in weight from 11 - 15 pounds and have a average lifespan of 13 years.

The name "daschund" is German and translates literally as "badger-dog". In modern German, the breed is referred to as "dackel", while in English, the breed is often nicknamed "hot dog", "wiener dog", or "sausage dog" in reference to the breed's characteristic elongated body shape. Daschunds are known for their tenacity, often chasing small animals, birds, and thrown objects with no thought to their safety or surroundings. This stubborness can make them difficult to train, but their natural playfulness and loyalty to their owners make them a popular pet. Burrowers by nature, daschunds will "burrow" into couches, blankets, and laundry if tired or bored.
