About Beagles

A member of the hound group, the beagle is a small- to medium-sized breed of domestic dog originally bred to scent-track game, such as rabbits. Beagles range in weight from 20 - 25 pounds and have a typical lifespan of 10-13 years.

Originally bred in Great Britain in the 1830's as a hunting dog, the beagle is typically even-tempered and gentle. Beagles tend to be neither timid nor aggresive, described generally as "merry". Their delightful and trusting disposition makes them poor guard dogs. However, they can fill the watchdog role, alerting their household to the approach of a stranger with barking and howling. Having been bred for the chase, beagles are determined and stubbornly single-minded, which can make them hard to train.
