About Desert Roadrunners

The desert roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) belongs to the Cuckoo family. It is famous for its mottled black and white appearance, its crested head and its long beak and tail. It is also known for its ability to scoot at high speed across the desert floor at up to 17 miles an hour, hence its name. Also it is skilled at pecking rattlesnakes. It ranges in the deserts of the Northern Mexico and in the Southwest where it feasts on scorpions, small lizards and snakes. It is a beautiful bird to see in the desert and is presently not endangered..
