About Cownose Rays


A species of eagle ray, the cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) is located throughout a large part of the western Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean. Males are nearly three feet across and can weigh as much as 36 pounds. Cownose rays feed primarily on invertebrates like clams and oysters. it has no teeth, using rigid dental plates to crush food sucked into its mouth. It's common for groups of cownose rays to travel together, using their flapping wings to stir up sediment and expose buried shellfish.
