About Leaf-tailed Geckos

The leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus phantasticus) is a species of gecko found only in Madacascar. It is sometimes called the satanic leaf-tailed gecko or eyelash leaf-tailed gecko. It lives entirely on the rainforest floor in the litter of leaves, where it is well camouflaged. It is suffering greatly due to loss of habitat and from illegal pet trade.

About Three-Horned Chameleons

Jackson's Chameleon is a small to medium-sized African chameleon, with the adults reaching lengths of up to 12 inches long. This chameleon ranges in weight from 2 - 4 pounds and in captivity can reach 5-9 years of age.

Jackson's chameleon originates from Africa, mostly from the more humid countries of Kenya and Tanzania. A subspecies of the Jackson's chameleon was introduced to the Hawaiian islands in 1970, and the population has since grown to cover all of the major islands. Male Jackson's chameleons are known as three-horned chameleons, because of their three horns. The females of this species for the most part do not have horns - if they do, the horns are extremely undeveloped. Jackson's chameleon lives almost exclusively on insects, but it also feeds on spiders.

Our plastic horned lizard (or horned toad - we called them horny toads where I grew up in California) is about 5 1/4 inches from the side of its turned head to the tippy end of its pointed tail. It is made of softish plastic and is even puffed up somewhat with air so that when you squeeze the belly it almost feels like a real horned toad! About Horned Lizards

Also popularly referred to as horned toad, horny toad, or horned frog, the horned lizard (Phrynosoma) is neither a toad nor a frog, although its blunt nose and round body make it resemble toads. Although unrelated species, the horned lizard is structurally very similar to the Australian thorny devil…so much so that the two species are considered an excellent example of convergent evolution (the evolution of similar biological traits in unrelated species). Eight of the fourteen North American species of horned lizard are native to the United States.

The horned lizard feeds primarily on ants and other insects, remaining still and allowing their prey to come to them. To defend themselves against predators, the horned lizard has evolved many interesting traits: camouflage, skin bristling with hard knobs and spikes, the ability to balloon their body and appear larger and harder to swallow, speed coupled with the ability to suddenly and completely stop (throwing off a chasing predator), and in at least four species, the ability to spray an aimed stream of blood from their eyes.

About Iguanas

Green Iguanas can grow to 7 feet in length, most which is from their excessively long tail. Males also have a large flap called a dewalp which make them appear even larger. If an iguana is grabbed by the tail from a predator, it will snap off and grow back without harm to the iguana. Green iguanas have amazingly adaptable fingers and claws designed for climbing. Iguanas also hear superbly. Iguanas are diurnal and can be seen basking in the top branches of trees. They can fall 40-50 feet without getting hurt. Their skin is tough and water resistant. Green iguanas are ominivorous and live often in groups. They hatch many eggs in burrows which they abandon. Little iguanas are born and grow without any parental assistance. Iguanas are threatened by hunters who prize their meat.

It was another one of those very lucky days when Catherine Todd (same last name, no relation) contacted me about taking some of our plastic animals to Guatemala so the artisans could craft beaded animals with the plastic replicas as a realistically-shaped base. The subject at hand was camels for a special project, but it seems the artisans make a wide variety of unique animals covered with a woven beaded "skin." Imagine my delight when a package arrived including these delightful lizards! When you purchase one of these unique animals from our collection, you help in a number of ways. The thorny devil or thorny dragon (Moloch horridus) is an Australian desert animal. It grows up to 8 inches long and can live to the age of 20 years. Thorny devils have large external spines which discourage predators. This strange desert animal has a false head. It dips its real head between its legs and only a head-like protrusion on its back shows. It has an amazing ability to camoflauge. It is brown and tan with spots, making it almost indistinguishable from the desert floor. It eats ants and can stuff itself with well over a thousand in a day. It drinks water in the inhospitable desert from dew which it collects at night.

About Frilled Lizards

The frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) has a large ruff of skin around its neck. The neck frill is supported by long spines of cartilage, and when the lizard is frightened, it opens its mouth showing a bright pink or yellow lining, and the frill flares out, displaying bright orange and red scales. It often walks on all four legs, but when frightened can run on its hind legs. Frilled lizards are found in Australia and New Guinea in savannah woodlands where they eat small insects, especially grasshoppers.
