About Gorillas

The gorilla is the largest living primate and inhabits cloud forest jungles and lowland jungles in Africa. The lowland gorilla tends to weigh between 200 and 500 pounds and stands about 5 feet tall. It walks on its knuckles in search of fruits and shoots to eat. Gorillas, genetically speaking, are the animals most similar to humans. Also, lowland gorillas live in elaborate social groups of about 15 members with one dominant male, and lead a peaceful existence. The gorilla communicates to other troop members through a series of hoots. Gorillas face a terrific struggle to survive. Widespread poaching, and slaughter by hungry invading armies, has decimated the gorilla poulation. Through massive conservation efforts to establish safe zones in parks under the watchful eye of wardens, the gorilla population has managed to withstand total extinction.

About Gorillas

Gorillas are primates, the animals most closely related to humans. Native to the equatorial regions of Africa, the gorilla is highly endangered, its decline the result of illegal poaching for the pet trade combined with advancing civilization and population growth. As of 2004, there were approximately 700 mountain gorillas and 97,000 lowland gorillas left in the world. Poachers hunt endangered animals, and hunt in parks where the animals are supposed to be protected. Many poachers use snares, which are very dangerous to all animals. Although adult male gorillas can reach 400 pounds, and females can reach about 200 pounds, gorillas are shy and like to spend their days quietly, either leisurely searching for food, or resting in the warm sun. They are vegetarians and will only attack when provoked or threatened. Gorillas are the largest and most powerful of the apes. More laws prohibiting, rather than just controlling, the capture and sale of gorillas need to be passed and enforced in all countries within the species' range. (Gorilla research by Joslyn Biggins.)

Goofy gorilla eyeglass holder Peeper Keepers

Do you know any gorilla fans? Give them our goofy gorilla eyeglass holders! Seriously, it may bethe last year we can get these wonderful animal eyeglass holders. Many of the animals we have in stock are selling out, and they are being discontinued by the manufacturer!

Some animals have disappeared from our inventory already. You can still get this nice gorilla. It makes a unique gift and is a great way to keep those items you tend to misplace . . . like your glasses!

Popular panda eyelass holders will be gone before Christmas

Carved wood animal eyeglass holders (Peeper Keepers) have been some of our most popular and successful products ever! To our dismay, they have been discontinued by the manufacturer and there are only a few left. The animal types have been disappearing over the last few months, and many that we have in stock today will be gone before the Christmas/Hanukkah season.

Three that we are sure will be sold out well before the holiday season are the panda peepers, the gorilla peepers, and the hippo.

Come visit our Animal Peeper Keeper page and order online. They are only available while they last, and your order will be shipped as soon as we get it. If we are out of stock in our location, we will contact you about the availability in the warehouse. In that case, shipping could take up to two weeks, but we will let you know ASAP what the status is on your order.

Tapir and Friends Wildlife World has been doing business online since 1997. Check out the many realistic (or nearly realistic) animal toys and gifts on our extensive web site!

"G" is for what?

In our online gift shop, we have a lot of animals that start with "G"! Above is a plastic golden lion tamarin - a small monkey with a beautiful golden coat.

And of course, "G" is for gorilla, too! We even have a plastic white gorilla replica or toy that can be fun for all ages above about 2 and a half years.

In fact, we have lots of gorilla toys and gifts. Please come see them all!

Can you say "gecko"? That's almost the same sound a real gecko makes. We have gecko jewelry! Take a look at this beautifully hand-painted gecko pin!

What would "G" be without an animal from the Galapagos Islands! This Galapagos tortoise 3-D interlocking puzzle is one of our most popular toys. We have a lot of other 3D puzzles, too, and you can find them from the link above. Recently we created a new page just for Galapagos animals, and we have quite a few. Check them out here on our special Galapagos Islands wild animal page!
