Our Plastic Proboscis Monkey

This engaging-looking plastic proboscis monkey replica is made of solid plastic and stands on a branch. It is 2 inches tall from the ground to the top of the branch. The color is somewhat imaginative, but has distinctive highlights. Our proboscis or long-nosed monkey miniature has a concerned expression but promises not to bite. This proboscis monkey replica makes an interesting pet or gift and fits nicely into a shoebox diorama for a school project. Check out our other monkey toys and gifts.

About Proboscis Monkeys

Proboscis monkeys or long-nosed monkeys are an endangered Old World monkey. It is found in Borneo in south-east Asia. It gets its name from its unusually long nose which can protrude up to 7 inches. They use their long nose to attract females which also have long noses, but not quite as long. It allso fills its nose up with blood and uses it to make a resonating sound to warn of predators. It is arboreal but also amphibious. It is a deft swimmer. It lives in mangrove swamps where it eats leaves and berries. As a troupe, the proboscis monkey walks in single file through the forest.

Our Peeper Keepers are running out! Get 'em while you can!!

Our Gorilla Peeper Keeper

Made of carved and painted wood, the gorilla is 6 1/2 inches tall.

What a classy way to keep your reading or sunglasses from getting lost on your coffee table, bedside table, hall shelf, etc. You can also use this functional sculpture to display business cards with pizazz and pride!

About Gorillas

The gorilla is the largest living primate and inhabits cloud forest jungles and lowland jungles in Africa. The lowland gorilla tends to weigh between 200 and 500 pounds and stands about 5 feet tall. It walks on its knuckles in search of fruits and shoots to eat. Gorillas, genetically speaking, are the animals most similar to humans. Also, lowland gorillas live in elaborate social groups of about 15 members with one dominant male, and lead a peaceful existence. The gorilla communicates to other troop members through a series of hoots. Gorillas face a terrific struggle to survive. Widespread poaching, and slaughter by hungry invading armies, has decimated the gorilla poulation. Through massive conservation efforts to establish safe zones in parks under the watchful eye of wardens, the gorilla population has managed to withstand total extinction.

About Bushbabies

Like lemurs, bushbabies are prosimians, primates that are not as highly evolved as monkeys or great apes. Also called galagos and nagapies (Afrikaans for "night monkeys"), these small, nocturnal creatures are native to continental Africa. Their name comes from the animals' cries which sound much like a crying baby. Their strong hind legs, which are longer than their front legs, make them agile leapers. Their large eyes give them good night vision and their long tails help them balance. Their paws are remarkably like a human's hand with 4 fingers and a thumb.   This blog is sponsored by Tapir and Friends Animal Store.

Golden Lion Tamarin

Meet one of our cousins from Brazil!

Our Golden Lion Tamarin

Our plastic golden lion tamarin measures 1 1/4 inches long from nose to rump (not including the length of its tail). Our solid plastic tamarin has such realistic features, it can be used to illustrate school reports and projects, decorate rainforest-themed birthday cakes, used as party favors, and can be added to your rainforest or primate collection. It can also be used as a toy except for very young children (it's small). This monkey is made out of plastic that's slightly flexible, but not posable. Its name is moulded onto the bottom.

About Golden Lion Tamarins

The golden lion tamarin is a highly endangered New World monkey. It has a flat nose but its tail, although long, is not prehensile. It is found in the rain forests of Brazil and may only have 1000 individuals left in the wild. It is arboreal, diurnal and lives in small groups of about 14 individuals. It derives its name from its lion-like features. The golden lion tamarin is a reddish orange to golden brown in color. Its hair is longer and darker around the face, forming a mane on top of the head and on the cheeks and throat. Its limbs are slender yet capable with sharp claw-like nails (called tegulae), befitting its strictly arboreal life.

About Lemurs

Lemurs (Lemuridae) are "prosimians." They are primates, but are not as highly evolved as monkeys or great apes. One easily recognizable feature that differs between the lemurs and other primates is the long, almost dog-like nose of the lemurs. Whereas the other primates rely more heavily on vision and hearing, lemurs rely more on their sense of smell. There are 11 species of true lemurs and 7 species of dwarf lemurs. Lemurs are found only in the woodlands on the island of Madagascar, and the Comoro Islands near Madagascar. The lemur is known for its long tail, which it holds up like a question mark when it walks or runs upon the ground. The markings on our stuffed lemur most closely match the Verreaux's Sifaka Lemur (Propithecus verreauxi).

About Gibbons

Gibbons are a well-known species of lesser apes. They are found primarily in southeast Asia. The most well-known gibbon is the siamang. The siamang has fused digits and a large bulbous throat sac designed for singing. Gibbons are arboreal and are amazing brachiators, namely they swing through trees, which may be as much as 50 feet apart and and at speeds up to 35mph. The gibbons make wonderful zoo exhibits. Gibbons live in small family groups of a monogomous pair and several off-spring. They also can walk upright on the ground. According to the Gibbon Center ,"... they are referred to as the "songbirds" of the primate family and the most musical land mammal, gibbons can project their voices up to 2 miles through the dense rainforest canopy. Unfortunately, their natural habitat is being destroyed at the alarming rate of 32 acres per minute!"

About Gorillas

Gorillas are primates, the animals most closely related to humans. Native to the equatorial regions of Africa, the gorilla is highly endangered, its decline the result of illegal poaching for the pet trade combined with advancing civilization and population growth. As of 2004, there were approximately 700 mountain gorillas and 97,000 lowland gorillas left in the world. Poachers hunt endangered animals, and hunt in parks where the animals are supposed to be protected. Many poachers use snares, which are very dangerous to all animals. Although adult male gorillas can reach 400 pounds, and females can reach about 200 pounds, gorillas are shy and like to spend their days quietly, either leisurely searching for food, or resting in the warm sun. They are vegetarians and will only attack when provoked or threatened. Gorillas are the largest and most powerful of the apes. More laws prohibiting, rather than just controlling, the capture and sale of gorillas need to be passed and enforced in all countries within the species' range. (Gorilla research by Joslyn Biggins.)
