Our Carved Wood Crocodile

The one-of-a-kind capybara figurine is handmade in Colombia, South America, of beautiful, natural palo de sangre wood. The shriny red of the wood is natural, and there is no finish or stain added. The surface shine and smoothness are created by rubbing the finished product in a way that burnishes it to a beautiful, silky lustre. Each piece is an individually-designed and carved work of art. No two are exactly the same, which is the reason our order button only allows you to order one. You will receive the exact crocodile you see in this photo. About Crocodiles

Crocodiles have long narrow snouts, and the 4th tooth of the lower jaw is outside when the mouth is closed. Their scales have modified to form thick tough skin. All crocodiles have eyes and nostrils are on the top part of the head so that they can lie in the water almost completely hidden from view. Crocodiles have very strong jaws. They do not chew their food. They swallow it in large chunks. In the stomach the food is broken down. They feed on a large variety of prey such as small mammals, birds and even cattle. Crocodiles grab their prey and move to deep water, where they roll over to drown the animal. They can leap high out of the water to reach their prey if necessary.

As it turns out the crocodile is the school mascot of Nancy Ryles Elementary School in Beaverton, Oregon, about two hours from our home location in Astoria!

About West African Dwarf Crocodiles

The west african dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) is one of three species of African crocodiles. It is the smallest crocodile in the world, growing to no more than 5 feet in length. It is black in color with patches of yellow on its underside, and has a short blunt snout similar to a caiman's. It is a slow, reclusive animal and hunts at night in water or on the bank. During the day it rests in burrows that may have a submerged entrance. Little is known about the population of this unusual reptile. It has been presumed by conservationists that its number is still plentiful. It has not been hunted with the same zeal as other larger African crocodiles, although leather products can be found in local villages made from its skin.

Wow, did this photo make our day! This is Walter the Friendly Stuffed Crocodile (green, on the left) along with his new friend, B., (the red-haired birthday boy in blue). Both seem to be quite ecstatic with their new friendship, which we expect will be a long and enduring one. We want to thank Dad (D.) for the wonderful photo! He wrote:

Hottest selling animal toys in February

What were our best-sellers in February? We had a three-way tie between our crocodile children's drinking cup (which also comes in turquoise, light green, and purple), our plastic red-eyed tree frog, and one of our plastic African elephants. The croc and the elephant have been with us for a number of years and are old favorites. The tree frog is one of our newest items. It's always fun to see what people like and which items continue to attract attention!
