Plastic Red Deer Hind

Sing with me now! "Do, a deer...a fe-male deer..."

Our Plastic Red Deer Doe

Our beautifully-detailed plastic red deer hind (a doe or female of the red deer species) makes a terrific toy or model for teaching your children, grandchildren, or students about the wonders of nature, the forest, and the animal world. It fits nicely into a shoebox diorama for school projects or use our realistic hind to create a woodland scene you can enjoy at Christmas or all year around. Our plastic toy red deer hind is made of solid plastic and is quite durable. Be sure to take a look at our other deer toys and gifts.

About Deer

Deer are herbivore mammals of the family Cervidae. Many species of deer exist on every continent except Australia and Antarctica, including the white-tailed, red, fallow, roe, chital, and Chinese water deer. Also included in the Family Cervidae are elk, moose, and reindeer. Deer typically weigh 70-600 pounds. They have slender frames and powerful legs, which make them exceptional runners, jumpers and swimmers. The earliest deer fossils date back to the Oligocene epoch, over 23 million years ago.

All male deer and female reindeer have antlers, bony forked appendages that grow from their heads. The only exception to this is the Chinese water deer, which has tusks. Antlers are shed and grow back annually. This makes them different from horns, which are permanent.

Deer have had a significant economic, cultural, and spiritual impact on humans throughout history. From the earliest European cave paintings to Walt Disney's movie "Bambi," Kate Seredy's book The White Stag, and Nintendo's Pokemon "Stantler," deer have captured our imagination. To this day, deer are pursued for sustenance, immortalized in heraldry and popular culture, and revered by belief systems old and new for their speed, strength, and nobility.

Moose

This miniature makes a great toy, diorama centerpiece, or collectible!

Our Plastic Moose

This engaging, realistic-looking plastic moose is made of semi-flexible plastic. The antlers and legs can be bent easily, and they snap back to their original position. Our toy moose is 4 1/4 inches long. This moose is great for school wildlife projects, gifts, toys, party decorations, for your animal collection and more. Check out our other moose toys and gifts.

About Moose

Although moose vary in size and shape, they are the largest members of the deer family. Males weigh on average over 550kg (1200 lbs) and females often more than 400kg. Newborn calves weigh around 15kg but quickly increase in size. Their color varies from a little brown to a dusty black depending on the season and age of the animal. Young calves are often a light rusty color. The moose has a long nose, drooping lip, hump at the shoulders and small tail, so you can see that the details in our model moose are quite accurate. Our collectible moose even has cloven hooves. The flap of skin that hangs beneath the throat is called a BELL. The correct name for a female moose is a COW; the male is called a BULL, and the young moose is called a CALF. Mothers are extremely aggressive, probably due to the scarcity of food in the winter, their greatest threat to survival.

Check out our terrific selection of deer, elk and moose toys and gifts.

About Reindeer

Reindeer and Caribou are the same species (Rangifer tarandus) and are members of the deer family. They are found on Greenland and large northern islands as well as in North America and Eurasia in tundra and northern forest regions. In Europe they are called "Reindeer" and have been domesticated for 2000 years or more. In North America the wild animals are called "Caribou" and the domesticated are "Reindeer". Domesticated animals are slightly smaller than the wild animals and their coloring is different, but in all wild and domestic stock both males and females have distinctive antlers which they shed and regrow every year. Their large, concave hooves spread wide to support the animal in snow and soft tundra and work as paddles when swimming. Reindeer are protected from extremely cold temperatures by unique hairs that trap air. This also helps keep them afloat when swimming. Reindeer are very social herding animals and the domesticated ones are very friendly, likeable and curious and are easy to fence, feed and train to pull.

Plastic Elk Replica

A majestic and revered woodland neighbor!

Our Plastic Elk Replica

Check out the details of this wonderful elk (Cervus elaphus) made by Safari, Ltd. Its superior design and details make it a museum-quality replica or collector's item, and yet the price puts it in range for the average collector of plastic animals. It can also be be used for school reports and displays or as a toy. This animal is made of very sturdy solid plastic, and each one comes with an information card.

About Elk

Elk are members of the deer family, and belong to a group called ungulates, the Latin word for "hoof." They are herbivores which means they eat only plants. Elk are able to eat tough plants, such as grass and twigs, that most other mammals cannot digest. Their multi-chambered stomachs are designed to allow them to digest tough plant fibers while extracting the most nutritional value they can from their food. On top of every male elk's head are two cup-shaped bones called pedicles. It is from these pedicles that antlers grow.

The antlers become locked into the pedicles so tightly that 10 bowling balls could be suspended from each antler and they still wouldn't come loose. However, in the early spring, the antlers eventually snap off and the cycle that causes antlers to grow begins again. Before they are hardened, antlers are protected by a soft covering called velvet. When velvet is harvested sometime during May or June, a mature male elk will yield 20 to 30 pounds of Grade A velvet. Historical scrolls that date back to the Han Dynasty in China document the use of antler velvet as a remedy for 52 different illnesses. Today, antler velvet is still used in holistic medicine.

Watch for Deer

An unlicensed landscaping service has been working the neighborhood trimming the bushes, flowers and fertilizing the lawn. This mom and four other white-tail mule deer were spotted on Aubrey Butte in Bend, Oregon, in the late afternoon yesterday and seemed quite proud oof the job they were doing.

Tapir and Friends Animal Store has a large variety of hoofed animals including some attractrive deer eyeglass holders (peeper keepers) and white tail deer jewelry. Also the store sells wonderfully realistic plastic reindeer, plastic elk, and  plastic caribou.  Our items are excellent examples for school science projects or for keepsakes, however they are not suitable for yard work!

New look for our stuffed fawn by Hansa

Surprises are always around the corner! I've just taken a new photo of our popular and very realistic-looking stuffed fawn by Hansa. The deer measures 23 3/4 inches from the front hooves to the tip of its little tail. In the old model, the head was looking toward us in this same position, almost like it was going to stand up. In the new model, the fawn seems to be resting. The fur is as soft as ever, and the fawn's head has beautiful, natural, deer-like structure.

We think this stuffed fawn toy is exceptional. It is so lifelike and compelling, you almost won't believe it's a stuffed toy and not the real thing.
