About Blue Whales
The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a baleen whale. At nearly 100 feet long and weighing 180 tons or more, the blue whale is the largest animal to ever exist on earth. As a baleen whale, the blue whale feed on plankton and other small oceanic life forms by sifting seawater through the great baleen sheets in their mouths and swallowing anything caught.
Like many species of whale, the blue whale was hunted nearly to extinction until international laws were put in place to protect them in 1966. In 2002, there were estimated to be between 5000 and 12000 blue whales living in the world in roughly seven concentrations.
