About Scorpions

Scorpions are found in warm regions. They are arachnids, and therefore more closely related to spiders than to insects. They are found not only in the desert, but also in forests. They spend much of the day under logs and leaf litter, and feed mostly at night on spiders and insects. Most scorpions are only painful to humans and are not especially dangerous, although a few can deliver a fatal sting. Children and elderly people are more at risk from their venom than strong, healthy adults. The approximately 2,000 species of scorpion vary widely in size, from about 1/2 inch to 7 inches long. Our plastic scorpion is most likely an artistic version of the Arizona desert scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis pallidus), characterized by a dirty light brown/yellow color and a black to brown streak on its back. About Green Anole Lizards

"Anole" lizards refer to members of the family Polychrotidae. The green or Carolina anole (Anolis carolinensis) is the only anole native to North America, concentrated in he southeastern United States.

While the green anole has the ability to change the color of it's skin in reaction to mood or threat, it is not a true chameleon. The green anole can also self-amputate its tail in response to an attack, but again, it is not related to the gecko. The green anole spends most of its time in trees, hunting small insects. An influx of the Cuban brown anole into Florida and the deep south has begun to push the native green anole further north.

About Bison (American Buffalo)

Nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century, the American bison has made a steady recovery in North America. Comprised of two distinct species, the smaller plains bison (Bison bison bison) and the larger wood bison (Bison bison athabascae), the American bison is the largest living land animal in North America, standing five to six feet tall at the shoulder and weighing nearly a ton.

While the names “bison” and “buffalo” have similar meanings, American bison are only distantly related to the two living species of true buffalo in Asia and Africa. This would come as a shock to “Buffalo” Bill Cody, who received his nickname from shooting hundreds of the animals during the hunting craze in North America during the 19th century. Truthfully, Cody never shot a buffalo in his life!

About Groundhogs

The groundhog (Marmota monax) belongs to the group of ground squirrels known as marmots. Most marmots are found in the mountains, whereas the ground hog is a lowland variety. It is also known as a woodchuck. It is one of the larger squirrels, weighing up tp 7 pounds and is often 2 feet long. It loves to live in alfalfa fields and burrows 45 feet of tunnels, 5 feet deep with several entrances. It eats mainly grasses, but will eat small insects as well. Groundhogs can withstand cold temperatures with its two layers of fur, but is one of the only animals that goes into true hibernation. Every year Groundhog Day is celebrated in February as a humorous way to predict the length of Winter. Other than man the ground hog must cope with wolves, foxes and large hawks as predators, but has sharp claws to defend itself. Since groundhogs live in colonies, members warn one another with a high-pitched whistle to sound danger.

About Doedicurus

With a height of almost five feet and weighing in at over 2300 kg, the Doedicurus (Doedicurus clavicaudatus) was the largest known species of glyptodonid, or large armored ancestors of modern armadillos. Doedicurus is one of the better-known species of animal from the last glacial period. Doedicurus lived about 11,000 years ago in North and South America.

Aside from its impressive armor, the most distinctive feature of Doedicurus is the large, mace-like knob of spiked bone at the end of its fully-armored tail. Scientists have speculated that, while an effective defense against contemporary predators, the tail was probably used mostly in competitive combat with other doedicurus. About Macrauchenia

The first fossils of Macrauchenia was discovered by Charles Darwin in South America. Macrauchenia was an ungulate mammal that lived until approximately 15,000 years ago. It resembled a humpless camel with a short trunk, but is not related to either camels nor elephants. Rather, Macrauchenia is related to no modern animal…with its extinction, it ended the evolutionary line of its Order (Litopterna).

Macrauchenia weighed about 1000 kg and was about 10 feet long. The most unique feature of this mammal is the placement of its nostrils on top of its skull, rather than in front. While early scientists theorized that these nostrils were used like a snorkel (implying Macrauchenia was primarily aquatic), most scientists now believe the nostrils were the base of a short trunk, which would protect them from the dust of its native savannahs.

About Lobsters

Our lobster replica is a clawed lobster, a large marine crustacean related to freshwater crayfish. Clawed lobster fossils date back until at least the Cretaceous period, over 65 million years ago. Although their appearance is similar to scorpions, lobsters are not arachnids…they are arthropods, with ten legs total (the first three sets have claws, and the first of these are much bigger than the others). Lobsters are amongst the very few animals that show no detrimental effects of aging, continuing to grow and increase in fertility until an outside force (disease, predation, injury) causes death. Generally, lobsters are less than 20 inches long. The largest lobster was caught in Canada and weighed over 44 pounds.

Lobster is an extremely popular and sought-after food. All commercial lobster are caught wild. While attempts to domesticate and farm lobster continue, none have been commercially successful. Lobster’s commercial popularity is relatively new, however. Prior to the mid-19th century in North America, lobster was considered a second-rate cuisine, fit only for the lowest members of society. Servants would specify that they “would not eat lobster more than twice a week” in their employment agreements. Well into the 20th century, lobster was used as fertilizer, fish bait, and a low-priced canned staple item, similar to tuna today.

About Unicorns

One of history's most recognized fantasy creatures, the unicorn was first mentioned by the ancient Greeks and became the most important imaginary creature of Europe during the Middle-Ages. Like many mythological creatures (the manticore, the griffin, and the sphinx to name a few), the unicorn is a combination of existing animal traits, combining the horn of a narwhal, the hooves and beard of a goat, the body of a horse or deer, and the tail of a lion or ox.

Many Biblical passages mention the unicorn, and unicorns appear in many Renaissance scientific journals. The horn of the unicorn is of 'Alicorn', a substance with powerful purification and medicinal qualities. Of course, Alicorn does not exist in nature, but false Alicorn powder (usually comprised of powdered tusks and antlers from many different animals) was commonly sold in Europe as late as the mid 1700's for curing many diseases and detecting and counteracting poisons. In addition, goblets made of alicorn (usually ivory) were sold and gifted to European nobility for their ability to nullify poisons in drink.

The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is perhaps the best-known species of mammoth. The earliest bone records of this species are around 150,000 years old, and it went extinct over most of its range approximately 10,000 years ago. A race a dwarf woolly mammoths existed on Wrangel Island off the coast of Russia until roughly 3700 years ago. Amazingly, many specimens of woolly mammoth remains are not fossilized, but are frozen organic matter.

Fully-grown woolly mammoths could be as tall as 13 feet and weighed nearly 9 tons. It’s named for the thick coat of shaggy hair which could grow to over three feet in length and was probably shed in the summer months. Unlike modern elephants, the woolly mammoth had numerous glands under its skin that secreted fatty grease into the mammoth’s hair. These characteristics, along with a typical fat layer nearly three inches thick, gave the woolly mammoth excellent insulation against both wet and cold weather conditions.

A cockroach is a general term for a number of species from the order Blattodea. The American species is omnivorous and can be found most anywhere in garbage or around rotting food in the kitchen. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will run away when exposed to light. They are incredibly resilient insects with some species capable of remaining active for a month without food, or being able to survive on limited resources like the glue from the back of postage stamps. Some cockroaches can go without air for 45 minutes and can live without a head for a long time. The lifespan of a cockroach is about a year (assuming it has its head).
