About St. Bernards

Originally bred for rescue in the Swiss and Italian Alps, the saint bernard is a very large breed of domestic dog. St. Bernards range in weight from 140 - 264 pounds and have a typical lifespan of only 8 years.

The breed gets its name from the particularly dangerous Saint Bernard's Pass in the Western Alps (itself named for the 11th-century monk who established a station at the pass). Local search-and-rescue dogs were called "Alpenmastiff", "Noble Steeds", and "Saint Dogs" until the middle of the 19th century when they were nicknamed "St Bernards". There are scores of tales from the region relating the heroism, intelligence, and determination of the breed. While, like any large breed, St. Bernards must be well trained and socialized, the greatest danger from them was to small children being knocked over and trampled. Well-socialized, the breed is friendly and affectionate, although they have a strong tendency towards slobbering.
