About Banded Kraits

The banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus) is a venomous snake found throughout India and North and Southeast Asia. Easily identified by its distinctive black and yellow stripes, banded kraits are amongst the largest of kraits. The largest banded krait on record had a length of almost seven feet.

Banded kraits are primarily nocturnal, and are shy and fearful of humans. During the day, banded kraits tend to "hole-up", and are lethargic even when antagonized. The bite of a banded krait injects a neurotoxin that is typically not fatal to humans unless a large quantity is injected and the bite is ignored. There are few documented cases of humans being bitten, much less killed, by banded kraits. This low mortality rate is due in large part to the rare conact with humans, but also due to the banded krait's tendency to inject very little venom when biting defensively.
