About Sailfish

There are two species of sailfish, the Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus albicans) and the Indo-Pacific sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus). Two features of the sailfish are its distinctive sail, an erectile dorsal fin that usually extends the entire length of the sailfish's body, and an enlongated bill, similar to those found on a swordfish or marlin. Sailfish grow to as much as four feet long in a single year, and have the highest speed reported in a fish, having been reliably clocked at speeds of up to 68 mph. Sailfish feed primarily on squid and small fish.
Sailfish can change their colors through their nervous system, an action that can confuse prey and communicate with other sailfish. The range of colors sailfish can adopt are amazing, ranging from browns and grays to vibrant blues, purples, and silver. Sailfish are prized gamefish, best known for their spectacular jumps.
