About Black-capped Chickadees

The black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a common songbird and a frequent visitor to bird feeders. It has a black cap and a white bib with rusty brown on its sides and a gray back. The black-capped chickadee can be found often in the Northern portion of the United States, Southern Canada, and in mixed decidious and coniferous forests. These chickadees can tolerate cold and don't necessarily migrate and often forage together with nuthatches and warblers. Chickadees have an odd sounding call of two whistles of the same identical rhythym about a third above the second and repeated to produce the chick a dee-dee-dee-dee from which the bird earns its name.
