About Mixed-Breed Dogs

A mixed-breed dog is a dog whose ancestry is generally unknown. Also known as a mutt or tyke, mixed-breed dogs tend to have the characteristics of multiple breeds together. For example, our mixed-breed dog has the body shape of a shepherd, with the brown-and-white coloration of a beagle. Mixed-breed dogs can be of any size, shape, coloration, or temperament.

While the traits of a mixed-breed dog cannot be forecasted like they can with a pure-breed, there is no proof that mixed-breed dogs are more or less intelligent, aggressive, or loyal than pure-bred dogs. However, one interesting German study found that mixed-breed dogs tend to be healthier, requiring "less veterinary treatment" than pure-bred dogs.
