About Dobermans

Also called the Doberman-Pinscher, the doberman is a medium-sized breed of domestic dog originally bred around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. Dobermans range in weight from 60 – 100 pounds and have a typical lifespan of 10-13 years.

Originally bred as a personal-protection dog, the doberman is an intelligent, aggressive, alert dog that tends to be loyal to owners and distrustful of strangers. Dobermans were the victims of a media-fueled stereotype of disloyalty and ferocity in the 1960s and 1970s, similar to the pit bull today. Because of their intelligence, however, dobermans are easily trained and have become a loyal and playful addition to many households.
