About Coyotes

Canis latrans, the coyote, is also called the "prairie wolf." It lives in dry and desert areas, whereas real wolves prefer forested habitats. The coyote is a wide-ranging species, found from Canada and Alaska through Mexico and Central America all the way to Panama in the south. Coyotes travel singly or in groups that are smaller and less well organized than wolf packs. The binomial name, Canis latrans means "barking dog" in Latin. Different pronunciations are heard in various parts of its range, with the final "e" being prounounced in the southern areas such as Arizona and New Mexico. Originally the name came from an Aztec word, "coyotl."
