About Cowry Shells

Cowries or cowrys are marine organisms from the family Cypraeidae and are gastropods, namely snails. They usually are small, but some can be found over a foot long. These cowrie shells have been used by tribes, especially in Africa, as currency and, of course, as jewelry. Cowrie jewelry usually was reserved to chieftans as a sign of honor.
