About Komodo Dragons

The largest living species of lizard, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) can grow as long as 9.8 feet and can weigh as much as 150 pounds. Komodo dragons are the top (non-human) predators of the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Montang, and Gili Dasami.

Interestingly, recent research suggests that Komodo dragons may be the last of a population of very large lizards that lived throughout the Indonesian and Australian region, most of which died out after the Pleistocene epoch, more than 10,000 years ago. This would make Komodo dragons true living fossils.

A large and ferocious predator, the Komodo dragon may also be able to deliver a venomous bite. Researchers discovered two glands in the Komodo dragon’s mouth that contain venom with many poisonous qualities. However, debate continues over the use and effectiveness of this venom, with scientists divided between the new theory (that Komodo dragons use venom to kill prey like other venomous reptiles) and the old theory (that the Komodo dragon kills their prey with a combination of brutality and infection).
