About Emperor Penguins
The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is found exclusively in Antarctica. The Emperor, like other penguins, can not fly but has strong wings (flippers) and a streamlined body designed for excellent swimming. They eat fish and crustaceans and are able to stay underwater for at least 15 minutes. Emperors are well known for their elaborate mating and breeding habits. They are devoted parents and guard eggs and fledglings dutifully. They recognize their young among the many in their colony through distinctive vocalization. The emperor penguin has a number of predators, foremost being the leopard seal. Also giant skua and petrals scavenge for eggs and the young and vulnerable chicks.
