About Red-Eyed Tree Frogs
Red-Eyed Tree Frogs are found in lowland tropical rainforests of Southern Mexico, Central and South America. This nocturnal little frog, although not endangered, is associated with the disappearing tropical rainforest. One theory regarding its bright, large, red eyes is that they startle or frighten approaching predators such as snakes or birds. This is called startle coloration. A moment of hesitation by a predator gives the red-eyed tree frog an extra moment to escape. Although the red-eyed tree frog looks dangerous with its neon green body and blue and yellow flanks, it is not venomous. It lies in wait in the rainforest canopy for unsuspecting prey to come near its long viscous tongue.
