About Holstein Cows

The Holstein cow is a popular dairy cow which originated in what is today Holland. The Dutch breeders bred and oversaw the development of the breed with the aim of obtaining animals which would make best use of grass. The result was an efficient, high-producing black-and-white dairy cow. It is black and white due to artificial selection by the breeders. It is the most common dairy cow in America.

About Horses

The horse (Equus caballus) is a hoofed mammal, and all hoofed mammals are called ungulates. The horse is an odd-toed ungulate in the family Equidae, and has one toe on each foot. In the case of the horse, the one toe has become very large so that we hardly think of it as a toe. The odd-toed animals, Order Perissodactyla, include only 17 species, which is fewer than the other order, even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyla). In the Order Perissodactyla we find horses, zebras, donkeys, and other animals that resemble horses, but the order also includes tapirs and rhinos. All other hoofed animals such as deer, cows, and hippos, have either two or four toes on each foot. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature into the large, single-toed animal of today. Horses are one of the animals for which we have the most complete fossil record, which makes it interesting to study their evolution. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4,000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3,000 BC. Just think of all the ancient art and statuary that depict the relationship between horses and humans! By 2,000 BC, the use of domesticated horses had spread throughout the Eurasian continent. Although most horses today are domesticated, there are still endangered populations of the Przewalski's Horse, the only remaining true wild horse, as well as more common feral horses which live in the wild but are descended from domesticated ancestors. Horse breeding is a very specialized area of expertise, and many breeds have been developed, each with their own characteristics of color, conformation, abilities, shapes and sizes.

About Monarch Butterflies

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a well-known North American butterfly. It is a beautiful insect and has been drawn, photographed and appreciated by countless people. It is noted for its ability to make migration journeys of up to 3,000 miles where it loves to congregate on milkweed. It tolerates cold weather poorly so unsesaonable weather can have a devasting effect on the monarch butterfly. Monarch butterflies have few predators. They have an acrid taste which birds learn to avoid. Monarch butterflies can now be found in Hawaii and New Zealand.

About Pigs

The words pig, hog and swine are generic terms and may be used interchangeably without regard to gender, size or breed. A male pig is called a boar. A female pig is called a gilt if she hasn't had piglets yet, or called a sow if she has had a litter. The pig originated as a Eurasian wild boar and was domesticated by early farming people. The pig is known as an even-toed ungulate having four toes, although it walks on only two. It is an incredibly intelligent animal with a brain size similar to humans. It keeps clean and only rolls in the mud to cool off, since it lacks sweat glands. It has been a valuable food supply for generations of people from many cultures. Some religions, such as Judaism and Islam, have prohibitions regarding eating pork. This is not because the pig is externally dirty, but because it doesn't have cud to redigest.

About Grizzly Bears

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horriblis, which translated means horrible Northern bear) are actually one of two subspecies of Brown bear (Ursus arctos); the other is the Kodiak (Ursus arctos middendorffi). Grizzlies get their name from the "grizzled" appearance of their coat that is created by the white tips of the long guard hairs on their back and shoulders. Their coat color can vary from light cream to black, but is generally darkish brown. Highly intelligent creatures, grizzlies find food by employing complex problem solving skills. Although mature grizzlies are very large - females are 200 to 450 pounds, males are 300 to 850 pounds - at birth the cubs are about the size of a rat, weighing only about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds. Factors leading to their endangered status include: destruction of habitat, accidental killing by hunters who mistake them for black bears, illegal killing (poaching), etc.

About Tyrannosaurus

Dinosaurs represent the dominant terrestrial lifeforms on planet Earth for 135 million years, from the beginning of the Jurassic period through the end of the Cretaceous period approximately 65 million years ago. While no human ever lived during the age of dinosaurs, modern palentologists have learned much studying the fossilized remains of these magnificent creatures.

The Tyrannosaurus (meaning tyrant lizard) or T-rex appeared on the scene during the Late Cretaceous about 65 million years ago. Full skeletons have been found throughout North America in Alberta, Montana, South Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Wyoming, and some have been found in Mongolia as well. Some skeletons have been measured to 45 feet in length. It walked on two legs and had a huge skull and an enormous tail to help with balance. It had two small powerful clawed forearms. There is debate whether this carnivore was just a scavenger or a killer itself.

Dinosaur Tracks

Seeing a dinosaur skeleton in a museum may be thought-provoking, but seeing actually tracks in nature is downright exhilarating. Just South of Tuba City, Arizona, on a large tract of Navajo Nation land are the footprints of countless dinosaurs that roamed a marsh during the Jurassic Period about 200 million years ago. These are known as "trace fossils" since it is hard to say whether the prints are from one or many different, in this case plant-eating, Dilophosaurus wetherilli. What became of them, who knows? Tyrannosaurus Rex didn't arrive on the scene until 65 million BC, 135 million years later and the above herbivore had long been extinct. Tapir and Friends Animal Store encourages people to study the facts about dinosaurs and extinct animals and to become comfortable with the incredibly long history of life on the planet. See the wide selection of plastic dinosaurs and dinosaur skeleton puzzles for sale. They are so useful for science projects and as teaching devices.

Please e-mail your photos and text if you would like to see them on this blog.

inky but not dinky

Some people like spiders and others don't. I'm not sure how endearing this arachnid is. I found this spider sitting on its rope-like web (see its heavy strands) on a luscious green leaf in the Amazon Jungle in Para Province in Brazil. Tapir and Friends Animal Store has a large selection of realistic plastic spiders for sale. There is an interesting selection of stuffed tarantulas and interlocking tarantula puzzles. They are all harmless, for those of you who are faint at heart.

See our Seahorses

This imaginitive sculpture of a seahorse adorns Millenium Park in Lake Oswego, Oregon. It is not clear why the city chose a seahorse as a centerpiece for this garden, but it certainly gives the nearby lush foliage an underwater quality. Tapir and Friends Animal Store has a large inventory of aquatic creatures . Come see some of the realistic plastic seahorses, seahorse 3-d puzzles and seahorse jewelry for sale, but unfortunately none are this large.

3D Dinosaur and other Animal Puzzles

These wonderful lifelike 3-D puzzles depicting dinosaurs and other animals are running out quickly! At the beginning of the holiday season, we had eight types of donosaurs - now we only have three left! Come on over and see what they are. As of today, these three are still in stock and ready to ship for Christmas!

The dinosaur shown above is Dilophosaurus.

The beautiful details on this 3-D puzzle animal toy add another dimension, so you could say it is 4-D (3-D + details)! It is certainly one of the more detailed we have seen, making it an interesting replica as well as a fun toy for adults and children above the age of 3. This colorful dilophosaurus dinosaur is roughly 5 inches long and 3 inches wide. It's a new item and we still need to assemble one to measure it for you. It comes unassembled in a re-usable plastic case that looks like a fossil. The pieces are cleverly fitted, flexible, and not too difficult to assemble. When completed, this striking dinosaur stands nicely for display with your favorite collectible animal replicas and figurines. Dinosaur gifts for everyone!

Dinosaurs never lose their appeal or their popularity. They seem to fascinate everyone, and we carry dinosaur gifts for "children" of all ages! The dinosaur dinking cup above is for toddlers, but I know one child who has not advanced to drinking cups yet, but loves to hold them by the handles and bang them together. Since they are durable, this works well for everyone :)

Our dinosaur bones (or fossil) model will be fun for older children or teens and older who simply want to enjoy learning and looking at the way the bones fit together. It's a bit too simple to be called a puzzle, but as a model it can decorate a classroom or bedroom or den very nicely. Shown here is our t-rex, but we have others, too.

We love our colorful Pteranodon hand puppet, and we think you will, too! It's made for smaller hands, so is perfect for children and adults with small hands!

The Iguanodon dinosaur above is just one of the four species of dinosaur 3D puzzles we still have left in stock. Order today, they are becoming extinct rather quickly!

Tropical fish 3-D puzzle

Tropical Fish Puzzle (Clown Triggerfish) Our white-spotted clown triggerfish is a beauty of a puzzle! Look at the gorgeous colors, and clear fins, and the many pieces you get to put together! Children have a wonderful time with these puzzles, and, as with most electronics, they can probably work it faster than you can! NO, THE FISH IS NOT ELECTRONIC, I was just making a point. The fish has no working parts. You or the recipient of this gift get to do it all manually. The clown triggerfish comes with a blue plastic stand so it can "swim" indefinitely once you've put it together. Or, if you'd rather, you can put the pieces away for another day.

We are happy that this is just one of the many toy animals you can get from our store that will help teach youngsters to appreciate the beautiful animals that live in the natural world.

The details on this 3-D puzzle animal toy add another dimension, so you could say it is 4-D (3-D + details)! It is certainly one of the more detailed we have seen, making it an interesting replica as well as a fun toy for adults and children above the age of 3. This delightful clown triggerfish measures 3 1/2 inches from nose to tail fin and 2 inches high to the top of the dorsal fin. It comes unassembled in a beautiful plastic nautilus shell. When completed, this colorful triggerfish sits snuggly on its blue plastic stand for display with your favorite treasures. The pieces are cleverly fitted, flexible, and not too difficult to assemble. Animal 3-D Plastic Puzzles Discontinued - Get Them While They Last!

Octopus 3-D Plastic Puzzle We hate to see these wonderful animal puzzles disappearing, but that is a fact. They are no longer available to us, having been discontinued by the importer. We've been looking for a new source, but have not found one. These puzzles have been among our top sellers, and they are also wonderful replicas of the real animal. Just the other day we sold out of our zebra puzzle and had to take it offline.

We still have a great selection of puzzles, but almost every day we sell out of one more animal. For instance, today we have only six left of the octopus you see above. If you're looking to find small, affordable, interesting and unique gifts for Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other holiday event, do check out our puzzles before the selection is gone. As of this post, we still have some puzzles left in the general categories of:

Dinosarus
Whale
Coral Reef Animals
Wild (Jungle) Animals
Polar Animals
Endangered Animals
Extinct Animals
Desert Animals
Reptiles

The details on this 3-D puzzle animal toy add another dimension, so you could say it is 4-D (3-D + details)! It is certainly one of the more detailed we have seen, making it an interesting replica as well as a fun toy for adults and children above the age of 3. This colorful octopus measures 4 1/2 inches across its tentacles and is 3 1/2 inches tall. It comes unassembled in a beautiful plastic ice cube. The pieces are cleverly fitted, flexible, and not too difficult to assemble. When completed, this striking octopus sits nicely straight up for display with your favorite treasures. To see our entire inventory of puzzle animals, go to our 3-D Puzzle Animals page. Be sure to look over our other plastic octopus toys and gifts.

3D Plastic Animal Puzzles - order while we they're still available! Time is running out on these beautiful, realistic, toy animal puzzles!

These wonderful 3D plastic animal puzzles are on their way to extinction. Unfortunatley, once our stock is gone, we won't be able to get them again. Although we still have over 40 realistic animal types in this fun and challenging 3D plastic puzzle format, the supplies are dwindling. They make wonderful stocking stuffers for Christmas, but we may be out by then. There is nothing wrong with the puzzles, but due to new import laws regarding paint testing, the tests have become so expensive that as of this writing, the puzzles are a casualty of the more stringent laws. The puzzles were safe before, and they're still safe, but so many tests are required PER IMPORTATION that suppliers have cancelled this product. Please check them out while we still have them. They are charming and educational, fun to put together and enjoyable to look at once they're finished. Or, you can take them apart and put them back together again. Even if they were not puzzles, these would be some of the best-looking plastic animals we know! Learn about animals as you play!

Last chance for 3-D plastic animal puzzles?

We HOPE it's not the last chance, but here's the deal. All of the 40-plus plastic 3D animal puzzles we carry have been discontinued by the US importers we buy from. These puzzles are popular with kids and adults and are both fun and a challenge for people many ages. Yet, popularity is not the problem. The manufacturers in China have raised their minimum quantity orders to to the wholesalers so high that everyone we know has stopped carrying them. I won't go into details here because I don't know all of the rules that the importers and exporters have to comply with (Sue deals with these details, and I can find out if anyone is interested), but I do know that although the toys were safe to begin with and some tests are, of course, needed, the level and frequency of the tests has been escalated beyond what many importers can afford to pay and still deliver the goods at a price consumers find acceptable. The new pricing and shortages have begun to take effect this year and we will continue to see changes as old stocks are depleted.

Although some of our puzzles are now out of stock, we still have a lot left for you to choose from - please come check them out on our web site - until they are gone!

"T" is for Tapir!!! . . . and T-rex and Toucan

How about a nice T-rex dinosaur 3-D puzzle? We have TWO T-rex puzzles in stock. You can take your pick between the one with an open mouth (above) that looks like it's roaring, and the one below with his mouth looking a little more friendly. These puzzles can be taken apart and put together any number of times. We even give you a plastic case that looks like a fossil to keep the pieces in if you don't want to store it on your shelf in the finished condition. The case also makes these puzzles good for travelling.

And of course, at Tapir and Friends Wildlife World, T is ALWAYS for Tapir! Tapir conservation is the reason we started the gift shop in the first place, and we have lots of tapirs! The unusual European-style tapir bumper sticker shown above is always a favorite.

We also have tapir jewelry to match your favorite tapir species. Can you believe that? Corinna Bechko makes these for us with the colors to your specifications. The tapir above is a Malayan tapir, and we carry earrings, pins, and pendants. You choose from a selection of colors, and you choose a color for the bead on the earrings and pendant!

We think this nice round tapir earring could be either a mountain tapir or a Baird's tapir. It has no crest, so you'd have to use your imagination if you'd like it to be a lowland tapir. This tapir, too, comes in a variety of colors and bead types, and you can get it as a pin or pendant, also. Corinna also makes a charming striped baby tapir, which could easily pass for any species!

In the plaster and ceramics department, we have this wonderful baby mountain tapir figurine made by hand in Colombia by tapir researcher and artist Sergio Sandoval especially for the Tapir Preservation Fund. Our baby tapir was first moulded in clay, then cast in plaster. The paint is all done by hand.

Oops, how did the toucan get here? He's interrupted our flow of tapirs, but we're going to let him stay. "T" is clearly also for toucan! We have this toucan in the stuffed animal form you see here, but we also have toucans made of plastic. We have have toucan jewelry made by Corinna! Come see all of our cool and charming toucan toys and gifts!

Now that we've had our toucan break, we're back to tapirs! Yes, we have so many, we haven't even put all of them on the blog. You can see our full collection of tapirs here. Above, you see our stuffed tapir, Yanisa. She's made by Hansa and everyone loves her!

These four tapirs (one of each species) show clearly differentiated traits. They're made by a Canadian biologist who loves animals so much that he got his PhD and works in a zoo. He knits each tapir for us by hand, and we've had these popular and lovable animals in stock for about 10 years or maybe longer.

Believe it or not, it's hard to find plastic tapirs! This nice example of a Malayan or Asian tapir is comparatively new to us.

Well, here we go. "T" is for Tapir! Audrey Jakab created this lowland tapir design and donated it to us in the year 2000. It's been one of our all-time favorite gift shop tapirs for nine years. We sell this design as a t-shirt and as a sweatshirt.

And this Baird's tapir t-shirt and sweatshirt have been with us even longer - since 1999! The lettering is not crooked. Years ago when we made our first scan, we didn't get it straight on the scanner. We promise, the type is straight on the shirt! It's funny how you get used to something. This scan has been with us for ten whole years and feels just like family :) Come along and join us, too! Wear tapirs - they're great for all occasions, and you can help let people know how important it is to preserve them in the wild. Your tapir shirt will make a great conversation piece!
