About Barn Owls

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is a pale-colored, long-winged species of owl found in many parts of the world. Barn owls measure up to 20 inches in height and can weigh as much as 28 oz. Barn owls feed on virtually anything it can catch and kill (including birds as large as itself) and are nocturnal hunters, swooping back and forth over open ground or perching on high posts to watch for and then ambush prey.

Like most owls, the barn owl is nearly silent in flight, due to noisy air turbulence being shredded by tiny serrations on the leading edges of its flight feathers. Barn owls do not "hoot", but instead use a screech that can carry over long distances and are highly piercing up close.
