About Paraceratheriums

Paraceratherium is an extinct genus of hornless rhinoceros-like mammals that lived 23 to 34 million years ago during the Oligocene epoch. Paraceratherium is the largest land mammal, and among the biggest terrestrial animals, to ever walk the Earth, the largest example of which stood 16 feet tall at the shoulder and weighed 18 tons. By comparison, the largest living terrestrial mammal, the African elephant, stand 10 – 13 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 5 – 7 tons. Paraceratherium was a herbivore, stripping leaves from trees with tusk-like upper teeth.
