About White Rhinos
The second largest of all land animals, the white rhino is about 5 feet tall at the shoulder, up to 13 feet long and can weigh over 2 tons. The shade trees, water holes and mud wallows of grassy savannas are their preferred territory. White rhinos are actually gray in color. They were called "weit" (Dutch for wide) because of their wide, square muzzle, which is perfect for grazing. They have two horns on their long face, carry their head low and have a nuchal hump on their neck containing the muscles needed to lift their heavy heads. However, because of this hump, white rhinos can't swim. The rhino's front horn can grow to at least 3 1/2 feet, but the rear usually only reaches about 22 inches. The "horn" is really just thickly matted hair that grows from the skull with no skeletal support. Like our hair and fingernails, their horns are continuously growing.
